Directed by theatrethreesixty’s founding partner Nicole Ann-Thomas. It features a diverse and talented cast of Malaysian actors - Qahar Aqilah, Arief Hamizan, Phraveen Arikiah, Ivan Chan, Esther Liew, Vinna Law, Vale Wong and Marvin Wong all taking part in bringing this dark comedy to life. Along side this stellar cast, The Pillowman will feature production design by Theatrethreesixty’s artistic director, Christopher Ling with music by Vale Wong.
Karturian Karturian is a storyteller. He’s not a particularly well-known one but he has written many many stories nonetheless. However, he’s being held in an interrogation room and being questioned by two police officers of the totalitarian regime he’s a citizen of. His crime? Apparently the sheer virtue of being a writer in a country that likes to execute them. As the interrogation begins, so does the blurring between truth and fantasy. Where does the fairy tale end, and where does the truth begin?
Comedic in the bleakest of moments, The Pillowman explores the power of narrative, and the power of the writer - not only how dangerous they can be, but at the same time how they are so important. Martin McDonagh, hailed by some as “the first great dramatist of the 21st Century” - discusses in brutal fashion the necessity of freedom of speech, without it there being no freedom of thought. It is a play that remains as relevant as ever more than a decade since its first reading, especially in today’s fast paced information culture.
Winner of the 2004 Laurence Oliver Award for Best New Play, the 2005 New York Drama Critics’ Circle Award for Best Foreign Play as well as a nomination for the 2005 Tony Awards for Best Play - Martin McDonagh’s The Pillowman has been brought to audiences across the globe, from Broadway, Iran, Turkey, Australia, Hong Kong, Singapore amongst many other countries, in many languages. It continues the theme of Martin’s work as a whole - worlds that are both caricature and unsettling, with characters that are best de- scribed as “casually cruel” yet startlingly familiar, knit together with excellent dialogue and action.
